okay i was going to post this thread a few days ago but i got preoccupied with work and y'know, like actually having a life and s*** so now im posting this and idk if this makes sense because i didn't finish writing what i wrote and i didnt proofread either but here it is:

Honest question: do staff have any idea whatsoever of what they should be doing?

Especially when it comes to dealing with appeals; because so many appeals I've read are a complete and utter mess.

Staff should not automatically deny appeals, ignore player's requests in appeals, reject players' evidences/explanations; and staff should definitely not do any of the aforementioned actions without reason or for a petty reason.

And moderators simply cannot deny an appeal for not being "sincere" enough, or apologetic enough. That's not a valid reason to not let players appeal a ban.

An appeal is a request to the higher court to reverse a decision.

An appeal is not an apology, an appeal is not a declaration of love, there is no matter of sincerity involved; all appeals are from players who sincerely want their punishment reassessed.

I commonly see this happen in appeals:

Player: Moderator, I think that your decision to punish me was incorrect.

    Moderator: I don't think you're being sincere enough/sorry enough/empathetic enough, appeal denied.

What is there to not be sincere of?

A player sincerely believes your decision was incorrect and would like it to be reconsidered.

I'm not going to go looking through the forums for every thread in which a similar situation has occurred, and I'm not going to bring up my own appeals, because frankly I don't have the time, energy, nor patience to relive such stupidity. However I will bring up a few recent appeals that have sparked me to create this thread.

In benji's appeal Denied - benji's appeal*[Denied] | Skyblock Forums, he appealed a rating removal because his permissions were revoked due to rating posts "dislike." I don't want to delve into whether or not his actions and/or punishment was legitimate, but rather the moderator's response:
"You don't seem very sincere for what you did."

Like, what does this mean? Did Dough mean that Benji did not regret what he did, or that Benji isn't apologizing for what he did? Because as I've mentioned, a player does not need to feel remorseful of their actions in order to appeal, and Benji probably very sincerely disliked the posts, hence the dislike ratings he gave.

An appeal is simply asking a punishment to be reconsidered. That's why a player can question evidence, can bring up new evidence, and can discuss the grounds of their punishment.

An appeal is not an apology.

    ---

Another thing I would like to bring up is this appeal Denied - rate perms[Denied] | Skyblock Forums and the related thread since when | Skyblock Forums.

How is it fair that a player has their permission to rate removed because they rated a post they disliked, dislike? How is it fair that a player's request to have another moderator take over their appeal is completely ignored and not even considered?

And how can a moderator justify deleting a report on themselves?

Staff need to stop acting like imbeciles and actually understand what an appeal is, and understand how to actually deal with one.

    peace out motherf***ers

oh I'm famous I've been quoted.

I believe Nyxa made an appeal a while ago and it got denied because she wasn't sorry for what she'd done, although I don't know the full story. *shrugs*
    No they don't.
And that people who spam dislikes are allowed to :p
Unfortunately we still have people saying "I regret ___" or "Sorry for ___" and all that, so that's probably where staff get the idea that we need to be sorry.

What's the point in trying to get your things back, after you've been punished. If you're not sorry for the thing you did wrong then really it's pointless. If you have a player messing around that means they couldn't care less they were punished.

Mods shouldn't be able to determine if a report on any other mod is valid or not, they are meant for cyp and mainly cyp. (I understand a mod being rude to a player can be handled by an smod but anything other than that it's not their job)

What I'm saying isn't that a player shouldn't be sorry for what they did, my point is that being sorry isn't a requirement to appeal, and that not being sorry isn't a valid excuse to automatically deny an appeal, because an appeal is not an apology.
The point is that the player does not believe the punishment is fair given the situation/circumstance and that they want it reconsidered. That's the literal definition of what an appeal is.
Staff shouldn't be allowed to deal with situations like these, since there will obviously be a bias.

I mean, if you aren't sorry about what you did then there's a high chance that you'll do the thing again. That's why staff deny appeals where the people aren't sorry. If the punishment was that unjust, don't make an appeal :make a staff report. If the report is deleted, it probably isn't an unjust punishment.

Then that results in a harsher punishment and staff being wary of their lies.
    So it's still:

When I deal with appeals, I focus on these main factors:
    1. Their ban history
    2. Have they done this before?
    3. Have they read the rules before?
    4. If they've been banned before, how long ago?
    5. What is their behaviour like?
I always make sure in appeals that players understand the rules and consequences before they are unbanned. The reason I prefer players ro be sincere is because if they are, they're less likely to do it again. I always make sure to hand appeals over if I feel I'll be biased and ask for opinions if I need them.

the only mod that is capable of dealing with appeals is you, the other red mods can't do it without being biased.

We've got people disagreeing with this when it's a fact. I violated a rule and we managed to sort out my appeal in an assertive manner. Natalia and I don't like each other much but we were both able to put our bias to a side and deal with it appropriately. Natalia looked at my ban history, my behavior and other manners. Why are you guys disagreeing with these when they're facts?
