The .jar file should be in the zip.

Get malware and get an excuse to get a new computer.

Get an excuse to redownload my operating system ;>
That's normally the case for other downloads, but not for optifine. It's strange.

It is kinda confusing, but there is a way of converting it that sometimes works for me. Double click on the .zip file, but don't click extract. Just have the page open where it shows the contents of the zip file. Then there should be a golden looking arrow. Like the screenshot below, that is right under the button on the top toolbar that says "add" or something like that. Click that and you should see the directory where the zip file is, and the zip file itself is highlighted. Then right click the zip file, click rename, and keep the name, but add .jar instead of .zip at the end of the name. It doesn't always work, and its a bit confusing, but it has worked in the past for me. After this is done, it should now be a .jar file.

    'duh'

I don't think you understand how it works, downloading things like Optifine ends up with it showing me all the files inside an optifine version.
I tried that before, doesn't work. I need Java SE Binary and it won't download for me.
Won't download, I'm a standard user on this computer, it tells me access is denied from downloading such an application.

I did that, and I did that with a complex process in which I copied over optfine for the version I needed from my different computer but it won't load.
