    I usually try find people with similar interests and go from there. Talking to people on teamspeak helped me get closer to people I may not have had too many common interests with.

    I used to be a green one quite recently, the only reason why I made friends was because I was active and friendly on the forums. If I didn't have forums, probably would stay as a lonely Greenie. And I guess thanks to forums, I'm a donor25. On forums is the best way on how to make friends, there's no judgement here as there is in game, there is no sign of it stating you are a donor or whatever. Just roam about and I hope you settle in well and make some friends. I'll be your friend ;^)

    get involved with the community. don't be afraid to actually talk to people. people aren't going to just come to you. talk to people on the forums, get on teamspeak, do stuff that will make you likeable. and it might be hard if you're shy, but hey, if they don't like you, move on.
