I was wondering if I could make a Spleef arena on my island and have Spleef Competitions? Without a bottom to it.

From what I read it looks like they'll need /trust on the island and if they do fall they can die if they don't have /god so make a bottom at least.
Though I'm not an in-game Mod, if I was, I'd look upon this as I do skin competitions using trap doors under players to drop them into the void for elimination. The players may not necessarily die from it, but this could easily amount to player killing if any visitors are trusted. Considering this is spleef, they'd need to be trusted to break blocks. I'd deem this illegal based on this logic.
Well that is why they will be clearly told that they need a cleared inventory, and that there won't be a bottom.
Even the official spleef arena had a bottom. Not adding a bottom could lead to a players death, thus player killing. Eg, they type /home from the void and die at their home and lose items. Yes you say to empty inventory but not all players will. In a way, this encourages player killing. Same goes for skin comps with trap doors. If there is no bottom, even if they cannot die (unless trusted), it is a death trap waiting to happen. So have a base to your spleef. It isn't difficult to do and will avoid players complaining if they die on their islands and complaints of lost items.
Some may not take the warning and end up reporting you because they didn't listen. I'm going to say no it's not allowed unless you add a bottom to prevent death.

It's legal so long as there's ample warning. But you'd be at increased of being griefed, and I suggest that you keep anything of value away or on another island.
I believe the best way to do spleen without trusting them is to use obsidian. They will fall into lava, not the void, and if you see someone burning, they are out, as players who are not trusted can also right click obsidian to make it lava
