The reasons so many people went is because of the draft and they were forced to. And even with the draft many people fled to Canada/crossed borders.
Then why are we acting like they were so much more brave and selfless to begin with? The message the OP was trying to get across was that the 18 year old age group was better in 1944 than it is today because they were all bravely charging to their deaths.
He's attempting to get that message across by comparing today's youth to 1944's as if they were better. My point stands.
