Reminder: Highschool- DON'T FREAK OUT!

Ahh, the good 'ol times are returning for my fellow brethren. Don't you adore the raging anger building up in your stomach as your eyes meet with the TV, and your ears almost combusting when you hear those words "BACK... TO... SCHOOL..."?

I've never been one to enjoy the first day of school. Let's be honest--- we're forced to be with people that we probably wouldn't break for if they just so happened to be standing infront of your car, we learn a few things that have us wondering "What the hell am I ever going to need this for?", and I swear if I see one more kid making out in the hallway I'm going to chop of my own arm and slap them with it.

That may have been an exaggeration. So calm your worry sticks, because I'm here to tell you that highschool... really isn't that bad. We're always going to have negative feedback, and highschool is no exception. So what do you need to know for your first day?

• You're all new. No one is going to judge you if you ask where a classroom is. Don't be afraid to ask a fellow student or teacher where anything is.
• Learning is a two-way street. You're not going to pick up much if you aren't willing to give it your all. Of course your teacher has to try right along with you, so hopefully you don't get stuck with a "bad" teacher.
• Don't judge a teacher from what other students say. We're biased due to the fact that your teacher is the one passing or failing you. Come in, give it your all, and hope that the teacher will do the same.
• Try not to be intimidated by the upper-classmen. They were all freshies at one point too. If you don't act scared, chances are they won't pick on you. In my experience, they were actually more friendly than my classmates.
• A clean bag is a clear mind. Stay organized! It may be a hassle at the time, but it will totally pay off in the future.
• Taking AP classes? READ READ READ. 50% of your learning will come from the textbook, most likely. It's a lot of material to go over in one year, and you have to take this seriously if you want to pass the final exam.
• HAVE FUN! You only have 4 years here. Highschool will go by fast, so enjoy it while it lasts. Don't waste your time wondering why Betty asked you AND Bob to Homecoming. You and Bob go have a ball WITHOUT Betty. Freshmen year is important, but don't stress too much.

Everyone's nervous on their first day. Just remember that you're not the only one going through this. Talk about it with a buddy, your parent, anyone. And trust me, it will get easier.

Pshh, ap classes? Just take notes in class, dur

 

Senior yo. I got some advices for y'all:

1. Don't do IB. Ever.
2. Don't procrastinate like me. I know you guys will do it anyway.
3. Sleep while you can, don't stay up all night texting or surfing the web.
4. Don't pick a class just because your friends are going there, worry about yourself.
5. Don't establish your reputation as a cheater or a slacker. Teacher recommendations matter.
6. Take the PSAT, SAT, and ACT when you need to. Don't wait until your senior year to cram everything in.
7. Learn additional stuff outside of school. I know you guys hate learning and studying, but it's worth it. Trust me.
8. Participate in extracurricular actives and get your community service hours done ahead of time. Community service is required, and your record of extracurricular activities will make you a potential candidate for that Ivy League school.
9. Don't worry about who's dating who. This will only get in your way.
10. Make reliable and long-term friends. They will be the ones that let you borrow their notes when you are knocked out cold at home, stay up with you to finish that extended essay, and be the ones that keep in touch with you even after graduation.
11. Have extra cash. There are lunch thieves out there.

 

School is weird in Scotland. I'm going into my 5th year of high school and I'm 15. But the year that I'm going into is so freaking cool because I don't have to wait in line to get lunch anymore, I just walk right in :')

 

How many years do you guys have to attend high school?

 

6 years but you can leave any time after 4 years

 

Leave? Hmm.

 

Yep, that would be the age of 16 and above. Some people leave and go to college, others leave to work and some people leave because they are "too cool for school"

Ahh. It's like that here too (in Georgia at least), but I have yet to see someone that drops out to go to college xD

For those entering college/any other voluntary education (like not mandatory by law), either you want to be there or you fail.

Your teachers will not baby you like they did in previous years. You look after you. They care about giving you the information. It's up to you to absorb it and use it to pass.

 

School is s***, no matter what way you look at it.

Not necessarily. It's actually really important, but I agree that some parts of it can be annoying and aggrivating. But that goes along with everything.

 

I don't see it that way. The people are the sh!t, but I am fine with learning and getting ready for college.

 

Wut? Only four years? o-o;

For me, it's like this:
Elementary School: Kindergarten~Grade 7
There isn't middle school, and High School: 8~12 ;-;

Asdfghjkl I'm going into high school next year... (going into 7th this year) ;-;
All this mention of work is really freaking me out ._.

How much homework do people get in high school? ;~;

 

It's a lot if you are taking AP (Advanced Placement) classes recognized by the College Board. The work load is amazingly heavy in IB (International Baccalaureate) program. You have extended essays and 200 hours of CAS (community service) to do in addition to the required hours; IB is really intense. Don't do IB.

I'm not worried about the actual schoolwork that much. More worried about how awkward it's going to be that both of my ex gf are both in my first hour. That and I'm taking 6 Ap classes so it should be a fun year.
