Just a suggestion: I think there should be a cooldown on the command /nick Way too many people are abusing, nicking as inappropriate things, faking to be someone else, etc. If there was a cooldown for the command, say one minute or so, when a person nick abused, everyone would have time to type /realname soandso. Where there is no cooldown, people can change their nick, say something, then hurry and change it back. A cooldown would be great, I'm sure it's possible. Tell me what you think! -JKC
^ Same with me. I think there isn't really a way to do this without an active developer. The thing is, on hellblock, you can't enter the same command twice, this could be implemented. Though Cyp and Noobcrew would expect a lot of complaints, but yeah, this would help catch nick abusers. Oh yeah, barn, you should have a keybind for /realname to catch nick abusers
True, but you don't repeat the same command a lot. Maybe if there was a way to define you can't use /nick twice in a row? Not sure
I don't know how they would do this, as I have a fairly limited knowledge of plugins, but if it is easily feasible, I think it is a great idea, as this is a big problem I see, mostly in groups of people, where one person starts, and other get the idea. I've managed to catch only a few using /realname.... So yes, I support a cooldown period, as it would mostly eliminate bad nicks and switchbacks because the risk of being caught would be much larger.
The potential to track down that person is already ingame, just not incorporated into a plugin. Supposing that the server admins, or whoever has console, is up for it, and supposing that logs are saved, someone can easily go back to when comments were made to see who is typing the commands. If the offense is reported with an accurate timestamp, it would be a rather quick process. Only problem with that solution is that I would bet that only noobcrew, and possibly Cyp, have console access, so at the moment, they are the only ones who could make this work. I think there might be a way to allow mods to view the console contents without granting them access to actually utilize it. If so, mods could check console as it happens, or look at the logs at a later time, to find the offender. You also might just be able to save the logs externally, and simply make those logs visible to moderators. It wouldn't be realtime, but if it updated frequently, it could be close to it. Those are the easiest and currently existing options that I know of for this issue. Making a cooldown function should actually be pretty easy though. All plugin coding is done in the same language, so it should (in theory) be as simple as copying over the function and updating the plugin. Would be worth a shot. I like the idea.
Good thoughts. Maybe a plugin that sends a notification to mods when a player uses /nick? Because Cyp and Crew cant be on all the time staring at the console
The problem with creating a new plugin is first and foremost that I don't think the server has a coder on staff. Since it would be a custom plugin, for an existing plugin, they would probably have to hire someone to write it for them, which I would guess is not happening. Maybe someone could track down the creator of the /nick mod and see if they would be willing to make the modification? I think currently, making the console update to an external site that mods have access to would be the easiest solution to the problem. It wouldn't be instant, but you could have like 60 second refresh intervals on it, or just a refresh button.
Cooldown would be ineffective. Change your nick. Wait for the cooldown. Once the cooldown is over, abuse and change your name. Sorry, no support.
But then players/mods could type /realname during the coldown time and see who abused, then punish them.
