I admit my statement is exagerated from today's point on view. However, in medieval times the food ration of a soldier consisted of 2 liters beers and 500g bread per day. Beer has long been a basic right of all germans. Germany has the most laws around beer, the best known beign the "Reinheitsgebot" which states what ingredients are admitted and has only been lifted recently by European Commission (because it also said beer has to be brewed in Germany).
