How many animals is too many?

    today i heard alot of people lost their animals. Obviously they are mad about it because in order to get some of those animals back (or at least just 2) it costs 16 grass block per kind. (which is like a 4-5 day voting cost times the number of kinds your getting)
    Is there Actuall rules stating "you cannot have more then X amount of animals"?
    I know it helps with lag but i would rather have a little lag then lose every last animal i have. I dont have a obscene amount but how much is too much. Also, is it right for mods to kill/delete all peoples animals with no warning.
    What is a "safe" amount of animals to have without risking having them deleted?
    10 each breed or kind?
    20-30 total?
    Lets define some more rules...

    Well Sky, chickens get killed MONTHLY due to that their the most laggiest mob in the game while
    Other animals get killed probably every 2-3 months. I say around 50 of each is okay.

    Again this is too much of a hassle... People should just buy the resources from those who have spawners or still plan to get animals because they want it for themselves.
