Global Updates - October 8th, 2024 Improvements to Redstone. This may reduce latency that Redstone contributes to, however it may potentially break some machines or contraptions. If you encounter any issues, please let us know.
Any chance we could get some more information on what was changed with redstone? Some components like composters were able to be interacted with by people that aren't trusted, was this fixed?
It's understandable that improvements need to be made, but it doesn't seem fair to make changes to some fundamental aspects of the game without telling us beforehand or giving some amount of details about said changes. I don't really see how we can provide meaningful feedback on this outside of "this machine broke, take a look at it" since we wont know if it's supposed to be nonfunctional due to the changes or if it's a bug because of it.
To add to my previous post, I do have some feedback/issues to report: 1) No noticeable improvements to latency at least on Economy as far as I've observed, still the usual TPS issues, lag spikes and rubber-banding/latency but, as I've mentioned before with the vague wording, I'm not really sure if what I'm describing is what was supposed to be "improved". 2) I had a dropper elevator that did work yesterday, but was confused on why items were getting stuck. I made some changes before I learned about the new redstone changes. Picture #1 was what worked before and Picture #2 is the changed setup to work with the new changes.
This would be related to our Skyblock plugin and how island protections are handled. Are there any other redstone related blocks that visitors can interact with? We were using Eigencraft but this change was related to us switching to Alternate Current. We have been using Eigencraft, which is essentially an optimized redstone engine compared to vanilla. As of version 1.19, another redstone engine called "Alternate Current" was added to Paper (Paper is what our server runs on, which is an improved version of Spigot). The developers of Paper announced during the 1.19 update that Alternate Current is faster and more stable than Eigencraft. Alternate Current reduces the lag caused by redstone dust and optimizes power calculations with less block updates emitted. This doc explains it way more: GitHub - SpaceWalkerRS/alternate-current: An efficient and non-locational redstone dust implementation It's behavior for redstone is slightly different compared to vanilla or Eigencraft but this is mainly related to large or technical builds. So far besides players making slight modifications, we haven't had many reports on this update breaking the majority of redstone machines. Furthermore, a player reported a redstone dust duplication exploit to us and we found that it was possible to replicate on Eigencraft, while it is not on Alternate Current. This update patches the bug along with the potential reduction in redstone lag. This improvement to latency will likely not be noticeable however, it is perhaps 1-2ms less per tick, but it is at least something. In regards to the exploit, the player reported it to us before it was known to others. And just reminding everyone that these sort of things are easy for us to trace nowadays and worse case scenario in regards to dupes, we run backups numerous times per day. The player that reported this issue to us will of course be dodging a permanent ban, which would be expected if a player did abuse such exploits without reporting it, and will be rewarded with a $100 gift card to the webstore. I am not very experienced with redstone but the second picture honestly looks like it makes more sense compared to the first picture.
Although I still feel weird that my dislike seemed to have been removed without my permission, I'm removing it myself this time. I greatly appreciate the communication, Crew, thank you! This sounds like a good change.
Mine was removed as well. I am glad we got an answer for the problem, but why remove the dislikes? Anyone wanna share why they removed mine?
Quasi-connectivity is a "bug" that has been specifically chosen to not be fixed - if it doesn't work, it's inaccurately replicating redstone. To be fair, this seems to be an Alternate Current bug since this issue does also occur with the Fabric release on 1.19.2.
See, this is information that would've been very helpful to know in the initial post! Even though I don't like my dislike reaction being removed, I won't be re-adding it to the post, although I would suggest adding this to the Change Log for anyone else curious about the changes in the future.
Blocks that come to mind are target blocks, wood buttons(with arrows iirc, I might be wrong), powdered snow(firing with a flame bow or walking on it while on fire) and redstone ore blocks, although all of these are mostly placed for the purpose of visitors. However, an option on /sb for sculk sensors activation for visitors would be greatly appreciated! There should be more stuff but I can't be checking suggestions again right now.
These are great suggestions, having sculk sensors work for visitors would add a lot of customization.
lol i think the fact that it was a DUPE that was discovered was what makes it financially worthwhile.
