I think Darnielle just likes the narrative possibility of the place. Pretty sure he lives in North Carolina. I'll put him on the list, but see below. I keep meaning to spend time with NMH and never get around to it. The phenomenon where people basically adopt zero new music in their preferences after the age of 35 is real. I noticed my OMG you have to listen this new group tendencies really dropped off between 35 and 40. And while having a partner with a very different musical history has expanded my listening habits the past couple of years, it's legit an effort. My big periods of musical expansion (YMMV) were from about 14-17, college, return from college (regional tastes were still a thing back then), and a final burst around 37 when I went back and reevaluated a lot of music that I'd overlooked or not liked 20 years earlier. Add in a too-late coming around on hip-hop* (via nerdcore) about a dozen years back, and the last two years as I'm catching up on the tastes of somebody who is much younger and did not grow up in the era of terrestrial radio and physical media. A lot of my new discoveries these days are groups that consciously resemble stuff I enjoyed in my prime years of new music acquisition. * This despite the fact that I exchanged compliments and high fives with a member of Public Enemy in 1990. Long story. Point is I shoulda taken the opportunity then to start listening but was busy with grad school.
i was gonna write a whole thing here but WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!! you just did that and then didnt listen to them!!!! thats insane. PE is doppeeeeee
Dude, you don't know that half of it. Fun fact! Before he decided that video games needed to be banned as a Threat To Youth Everywhere, Jack Thompson was on an even bigger crusader against music with naughty lyrics. I was in grad school and somebody decided to have a public debate on the idea of music censorship between Thompson and Professor Griff, PE's Minister of Information. Jack did not know how badly outgunned he was. During Q&A I started with a question that prompted Thompson to say something egregiously stupid and I took him apart so thoroughly that he was sputtering about how I was a stupid kid (he was speaking to an audience of engineering school students) who should be thanking him for his efforts. Huge, resounding boos that shook the rafters and he literally fled the stage. Griff left the hall through the audience, walked up to me, said, "You're a smart guy", I said, "Ah, Thompson's just a [bad word]in' idiot" and we laughed and high fived and fist bumped. So my oversight was especially unforgivable.
My favorite band is The Smashing Pumpkins. Ive really enjoyed their more soft music lately. My go to recently has been Rhinoceros. Such a mellow song.
I couldn't imagine just randomly dragging an active community member for no reason like that but go off ? :/

For sure, he's great. Very versatile. He's got some typical house beats as well as some more ambient stuff.
