Terraforming

I have recently started expanding my island, as I intend to build new public areas (shop, grinders...)
As dirt is an illegal-to-trade item, I am unable to trade dirt, therefore I am using grass blocks to expand farms etc.
However after placing a grass block there is no way to get it back, as silk touch is disabled. Since I want to build a naturally-looking area, I need to place the dirt bedide grass blocks in order to make the grass grow on them.
Surprisingly, the grass has not even started expanding after several weeks. Was this disabled? If so, I have never noticed that.

Please reply as I am quite confused about this.

 

Grass spread is enabled as I have recently done so.

 

Uhm... Any ideas why it is not spreading on my island?

 

Is it lit up?

 

There are a few torches. What's the required light level?

 

Light makes no difference , I believe. Might have to do with the biome?

 

Idk... My island is in the ocean biome...

You need at least one grass block so it spreads, maybe you only put dirt and not grass?

 

Nah don't worry I did. The actual problem was that there wasn't enough light. As I am using Fulbright I did not know that the couple torches were not enough
