Questions about hoppers

Since coming onto this server I've had plans to automate my island as much as possible, farms and mob traps being the main priority. However hoppers are disabled, is there any real reason for this? I can understand things like tnt being disabled but hoppers? It just doesn't make sense.

 

They are disabled as they bypass locketted chests and were used for looting.

 

Hm, the only reason I could come up with is that they put too much stress on the server. I had no idea that was the reason :/ Such a shame really.
