I can't specifically think of the name, but there's (at least) one server that has upgradable hoppers and I think this would be a great addition to the server.

The only issue I have with the way it is now is the limit, not because of too many farms/spawners but because of Redstone and other contraptions.

I think having upgrades (examples listed below) would limit the hopper usage that picks things up but would still allow for the 'limit' per person to remain the same and allow for the lag to still remain "stable".
-Having these upgrades would also potentially reduce the lag by not having items on the ground/in water and less time spent being pumped out by the hoppers as well.

T1 hopper (basic): same as before
T2: brings 64 items through (maybe with delay??)
T3: picks up all items dropped in chunk it's placed it (or 16x16 area around the hopper)
T4: expands the radius of auto hoppering to 2x2 chunks (or 32x32 area)

The upgrades would probably be fairly expensive (maybe T1 being +/- $25000) and exponential when increasing.

neutral I feel like the current speed of hoppers which is 4 items per 16 ticks if just fine as it is. Even if you do run out of hopper usage you can always use water streams to transport items or you can use droppers to make a chain of them.

the idea isn't just hoppers being slow, its also reducing entity lag and having other upgrades that make hoppers more efficient when it comes to farms

True, but the server is normally laggy and everything else is slow, but I don't know why they aren't upgrading the server. I honestly think the tps is fine how it is right now. You will get used to stuff being slower and lagging soon. Trust me

I feel like both you and monster are missing the point.
I'm not suggesting this to solely combat lag, it's also just an idea to make eco more efficient for farming/etc.

I’m not saying this to combat lag in fact lag is the last thing I’m worried about the way
One really good way to make farms more efficient is to use water streams they quickly move items and even faster with packed ice

But with items flowing, it causes more lag.

I'm just saying this would just make it more efficient because there wouldn't be a 'z' limit

Neutral I think the speed of the hoppers is good but it would be cool with different options :)

While items flowing in water does create lag, items moving through hoppers creates more lag in this server, so no support

I don't know. If hoppers are transporting more items at once don't you think people will eventually will build bigger farms that get out of control? And although items may not be on the ground bigger farms will make the server lag and go bad really quick.

Hoppers do create lag for the server. Hence the limit for hoppers on an island. However I understand what you are saying.

I currrently tackle the expensiveness of the hoppers by using transport systems that involve droppers. However, those involve timers that can also just be a lag machine for the server.

I have previously known a server to have a plug-in that uses Tubes. I don’t know if you have ever played Tekkit, but it’s kind of like that. However, I’m not sure of the lag that this would cause.

From a player point of view, I think the tiered hoppers would give an unfair advantage to the people who are already rich - as they could upgrade all of their hoppers before some players even get hoppers. Which would in effect make the largest farms on the server even more efficient, and this may cause the downfall of the economy.

I do understand where you are coming from - and I love the idea of the implementation of being able to have different types of hoppers. I just don’t know how I feel about the introduction of them with the current state of the economy.
