I would like to say that the above mentioned words are used incorrectly.
When I look up the definition for "donation", dictionaries give me the following definitions:
    1. a voluntary gift (as of money or service or ideas) made to some worthwhile cause
    2. act of giving in common with others for a common purpose especially to a charity
    However, there is more.
The 1st definition is probably what best suites this server. Now what a donation is:
gift (something acquired without compensation) - meaning we get nothing in return.
The thing is, people are being called donors and are "donating" to the server by buying things online, which will obviously bring compensations.
It is annoying in a form because it makes the "donor" look a lot more "contributing" to the server when they are actually getting something in return.
I don't get why we use a word that doesn't even match what we are meaning.

Well it's like the server and the players (donors) are gifting each others, a gift for a gift. We give a "gift" aka the money to the server that we like to help it keep running in exchange for another "gift" aka a rank with perks, commands and other stuff.

But that isn't the point of a donation

Well yeah, but my point is that the term is incorrect. Maybe something like "ranks" would be better instead of "donor ranks".

It's how servers circumvent the EULA and are free of liability. If the server shuts down tomorrow, they don't have to refund you a penny because it was a "donation." Also Mojang EULA prevents servers from charging real money for items in game (not really enforced well).

Wow. So that is why they use the terms "donation" and "donor". Just to escape the EULA...
I thought selling Diamonds, Spawners, Elytras were against the EULA... turns out it was a donation for something.

That is true that the server, like most, don't actually follow Mojang's EULA, however pretty much all servers call it a donation, so I am happy to stick with that.
    - It would be nice for a completely non pay2win skyblock server that follows Mojangs EULA. A server I played on was contacted by Mojang about them not following the EULA, and they got rid of all pay2win items on the store, so now all you can buy is ranks that don't actually benefit you in-game, and when you purchase a crate key you purchase it for everyone online. The server has 600 players average, (They reached a new record of 1100 online at once yesterday) and they are surviving fine, and they changed it for the entire network of 8 servers.

I'm not against pay2win items, because I understand that the smaller servers still need to make a profit, but I feel Skyblock could survive easily if they just changed what you can buy on the store. Luckily they removed Donor400, because that really was just ridiculous, $400 for a digital item, something that you cannot actually hold or touch.

I’m not really bothered by it. I mean it’s just words. You give money, it’s a donation, they give you perks

This is common knowledge. It really doesn't matter what they call it. In the end, the effect is the same.

People give donations to support a cause or organization that they like. It's the same here. I'm sure you get emails from the World Wildlife Federation, Earthjustice, Change.org, and all those other charities/do-gooder establishments asking for donations. In return, they give you a 'free' gift bag or plushie animal doll. It's the same concept.

Nobody 'donates' to servers that they don't like. People 'donate' to this server's owners because they like the server, and want to support it. The server's most definitely not in dire need of funds, nor is it in danger of shutting down because of an outside influence. Thus, people's 'donations' are kind of like a tip of the hat to the server owner. Think of it as a "hey, thanks for running this great server that I enjoy. Here's a little something(or a big something) to express my appreciation".

That is what I said, but if you donate to some cause, normally you're not expected to get something back. It just seems kind of weird that people are "donating", yet in other servers they literally call it "buying stuff". Sure, some people think that by donating you are giving a tip, and that is true, but some people only "donate" for the benefits.
    xD
