Fix voting site problem(?).

Discussion in 'Other/Uncategorized Suggestions Archive' started by Gamzee24, Jan 4, 2018.

?

Is it unfair how people can get +1 more votes than the day (On January 4th, people have 5 votes)?

  1. Yes, it is really annoying and this problem should be fixed asap.

  2. No, this is not a problem (and I am one of those people that have +1 more votes than the day :D)

Results are only viewable after voting.

So I have a problem with the voting site and how it works. I am noticing that people are getting about +1 votes than the number of the day (For example, if it's January 4th and people somehow have 5 votes). I was wondering if this problem can be fixed so that everyone can have the same number of votes as the day. Some people told me that this is because of the Australian timezone. I don't know if this is true or not. But the way on how people get one more vote than the day is really unfair to the people who can't equal their amount of votes.
Does this problem bother any one else or just me? Because all I see on the top voter list is a few people with 5 votes and the rest have 4. And the day that this thread is being posted/written is on January 4th.
Please fix this issue as it is annoying and unfair.

Thanks for taking the time to write to this suggestion, Gamzee. I'm afraid this isn't really something we have control over, however.

The voting servers are not owned or managed by Skyblock.net and we have no control over how they tally votes or what their cutoff time is for accepting new votes.

As for why the number of votes shown for the top voters list doesn't always exactly match the calendar date, it has to do with the way dates work around the globe. While it's easy to understand time zones when you're looking at one continent (for example, California is always three hours behind New York) one thing that's harder to understand is what happens when the timezones wrap around the world and meet on the other side. While it doesn't make a sense at first, when you consider it further, it becomes clear that all the time zones can't all be on the same date as the same time, and there's going to be somewhere on the globe where neighboring time zones are on different days of the week. It may be Friday New York at 2 a.m., but it's still Thursday in Los Angeles.

For this reason, it's not really possible to lock the number of votes to match the calendar day exactly, since the current calendar day depends on where you are on the globe and it's not going to be the same for everyone all at once. That's why when it's still the fifth of the month for you, you can see people with 6 votes. All that means is that the clock used by the voting site is in a different time zone (and therefore, sometimes on a different date) than you are.

I hope this makes sense now. I know it can be hard to wrap your head around things like this. We're just not used to thinking about dates and times on a global scale, so it's not always intuitive.

Feel free to reach out to the folks who run the voting servers if you have any questions about things like their vote cutoff times. I'm sure others in the community would be very interested in finding out what you learn! :)

Ye ok I understand the stuff with being different days with other places across the globe. I just thought that this possibly could be discussed about considering that it's somewhat a problem. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this topic and I thought I might as well and see that if anyone else had this problem (now that I think about it, this thread could be in the discussion topic too *thinks*). Any way thanks for clearing up this nonsense. I guess I'll just have to try voting faster, I don't know. Thanks again for clearing this up.
But if you feel that this thread should be locked then lock it.
