What happens when we become paralyzed?

Paralysis causes us to lose the ability to use our muscles. Muscle is a special tissue that allows us to move our body in many ways. (wink wink). The muscles process messages from all over the body. Unfortunately, sometimes nerve cells, or neurons, become injured or die. When this happens, we lose the ability to lose our muscles and we call that paralysis. Muscles of the face, arm, and leg on one side of the body that become paralyzed is called hemiplegia*. If this happens, it will damage the other half of the brain. Injury of the spinal cord affects different parts of the body according to the damage intake and where exactly it occurred. Paralysis of both lower limbs is called paraplegia. If both arms are paralyzed, it is called quadriplegia. The amount of time paralysis can affect you can differ from minutes to permanently. It all depends on the damage or disease. As mentioned before, paralysis can affect any muscle in the body which means that you can lose the ability to talk or breathe unaided.

You can become paralyzed in many ways. The most common are by sports or car accidents. Others are: poisoning, infection, blocked blood vessels, and tumors. Some paralysis can be treated such as brain and spinal cord injuries(if treated correctly) and poliomyelitis*. Poliomyelitis has a vaccine that shoots through you to fight off the disease. But most of the time paralysis is unstoppable. Fortunately, you can live with paralysis. People who have it live normal lifespans and if you are confined to a wheelchair only, you can still drive, swim, fly planes, and even ski. Even when paralyzed, people still exercise and the most effective exercise is being in the water. The water provides both buoyancy and resistance.

There may be a cure to paralysis in the future with help from the young generation coming up. Be one of the people who grow up to find a cure. :3
