What happens when the brain sends signals to become happy or sad?

First, let's talk about when you become happy and why you smile. Let's say you haven't seen your lover in a long time because they went on vacation and they just got back from that vacation. Neuronal signals get sent to our brainstem, the oldest part of our brain. After that happens, the cranial muscle guides the signal to our smile muscles. Once it reaches the smiling muscles, the positive feedback loop goes back to the brain and reinforces it with a joyous feeling.

Next, what does stress bring us to our brain? The brain sends nerve signals down the spinal cord to the adrenal glands.

The nerve signals tell the adrenal glands to release a hormone called adrenaline. The brain also sends signals to the pituitary gland that is located at the bottom of the brain. Within a few minutes, it will have been released throughout the blood stream and stimulate the adrenal cortex to create a hormone named cortisol.

What happens when we become sad? A chemical called neurotransmitters is released inside the brain causing us to be sad or depressed. If too much is released, it may cause serious depression. Scientist's believe that the neurotransmitter's get sent to the Limbic System which is a part in the brain. It is the one that goes dark when problems arise in our life.
