Preface: There has been a recent surge in questions asking whether challenges work, or whether they’ll be coming back. I know there’s limited developing resource, so I understand what I’m suggesting here may not be viable.

Skyblock in its current form seems to have a less than desirable player capture rate. A lot of new people join every day and unfortunately leave. I believe there are a few common reasons for this.

    1. Lack of gradual and enforced tutorial. Yes, there are guide books, and /warp info – but often these can be overwhelming and a lot of information to take in at once.

    2. Grass. When first starting out, grass is difficult to come by. With voting, trading and vote party rewards being the only real option, it can be hard to progress and build your island with very little currency to buy new items.

Suggestion: Frame the beginning of Skyblock from when the player first joins into a tutorial or guided tour of the server and the gamemode using the challenges.

These could be a selection of tutorial challenges, separate to the normal challenges of which all tier 1 challenges must be completed first before the normal ones are unlocked.

By using challenges to structure and teach about the server and its points of interest, this could help encourage players to stay and make use of the facilities, rather than leaving shortly after because they don’t really know how to progress or how to use the public warps available.

By rewarding achievements with a small amount of grass, this allows newer players to get involved in the economy more.

How would this be achieved? When the player first joins, display them a message instructing them to do /challenges. For example, the first challenge that would be unlocked from the get-go, could be a cobblestone challenge.

When hovered over in the menu, it displays the reward and a hint of how to complete it underneath its description.

What happens on completion? Once the first tier of challenge has been completed, a message would appear in chat detailing any other ways to obtain the items from the challenge.

A small reward of grass would be given to the player for their effort.

What next? Once tier 1 of a challenge has been completed, it unlocks a selection of new tutorial challenges and a higher tier challenge along the same lines of the one just completed.

    Possible ideas for challenges:

Potential downsides: The availability of grass may be exploited, but by keeping it at a lower amount it should not affect the economy price of grass, and in-fact would help boost trade and help keep newer players interested.

Love the idea always wanted more challenges add or an extension to them, i find that the challenges will show players how to play skyblock without those tedious messages "how do i get grass?"

I guess what you are also saying is everyone who is a player on the server currently are all resilient and we got through the confusing part ;)

Support, great idea and I hope it keeps the players around. Joining a minecraft server and being bombarded with temporary information regarding how to play is often very confusing, especially if it is a new minecraft game mode you aren’t familiar with.

This could also be used to teach about the rules. I’ve wished for something like this for a while

I tried to spread the bibble guides, but that would prove more simple and effcient tbh

An excellent way to keep the attention and pace of new users. I think it would be useful to not only showcase rules, but also teaches players to be self reliant (and how to play without relying on external resources)
I fully support this, it's a wonderful idea.

Heck I'm not even a beginner per se but someone who has returned after awhile...and I have been looking on the forums to see if there is anything about the challenges (in Economy especially), as it shows that I have already completed all challenges...which I haven't. Not sure what I'm missing...but I wholeheartedly support something of this nature to simplify things a bit where I have forgotten specifics and/or where things have changed since I was last active. :)

I extremely love this idea and hope for it to one day become a reality.

However, I greatly fear the amount of coding and building required to achieve such a thing. Challenges would need a large overhaul, and we may want to look into modifying spawn/some of the warps to better guide players through these challenges.

If we wanted to dive all the way down the rabbit hole, I have thought and messed around a bit with the idea of a fully immersive tutorial, though it has many levels of complexity and pain for developers.

Here's my vision of an ideal tutorial...
    1. Upon joining, players use /ni (or similar command of their choice). It does not pop-up an island option, but instead creates them the default Skyblock island (more on that in a bit)
    2. The player is instructed to get a lava bucket and ice block from their starter chest. Once they're detected in their inventory, it highlights blocks for them to break. Highlighting can either be done by flashing the blocks to break as different variations of grass/dirt, have some item floating over them serving as a downward pointing arrow (think the stationary displays over chest shops). The player will then break out the shape of a cobble generator, place and break the ice, and then place the lava. (This step requires the player to be on the default island, otherwise we'd need create custom tutorials for every map variation, which gets quite messy on some)
    3. Once their first cobble has been generated, they'll be instructed to break some wood from their tree. After breaking a few blocks, it'll tell them they can either create a workbench, or inform them that they have access to /wb and can craft things in their inventory on the go
    4. The player will craft their pickaxe, mine their first cobblestone, and the first part of the tutorial will be over with a big flashy congratulations or something.
    5. From there, the tutorial will tell them that they can get more saplings from /kit sapling, and explore other challenges through /challenges (where I think something like this thread could then come in)
    6. Players will also be informed that they can restart their island to pick another island type, if they so choose. Along with that, players will be informed of the /changebiome command, and get one free biome change they can redeem anytime.
From there, I think challenges could handle the rest.

Having a tutorial like this could help out with a lot of the early game issues. Players would be forced to learn how to make a cobblestone generator, they get an introduction to /wb, /kit sapling, /ni replace, /changebiome, /challenges, and possibly more, all at their own pace and directed directly at them.

After writing that all out, I realize a revamp to challenges is much easier than going through all of that  Hopefully we're able to work through all of our current issues, and get to making cool changes to help out new players like this :)

Yes! I like this suggestion a lot.

The primary concern would be to just get some sort of tutorial out there for newcomers. Whilst I was originally making it I couldn't help but notice the overlap between what I was suggesting and the ordinary challenges which already existed - so it makes sense to keep them in their current form, but just add in the first tutorial section which puts across the key messages, without being too cumbersome.

Thank you for taking the time to think about this, I appreciate the insight from someone who knows what would be possible and more realistic for my suggestion to be implemented. :hah:
