As I type this I am using a HP laptop. It's not my laptop rather a loan from my college. I gotta say it's really great and can do a lot of things. I'm currently using a HP Elitebook with an i5-6200U cpu @2.30 Ghz. Has 8 GB of RAM and 238 GB of space as my Hard Drive. I also have Intel HD Graphics 520. I think its better with my Dell laptop I have

I have a Dell Insprion 15 3000 series laptop. The specs on that one on the other hand are nowhere near as great, but for the price and its compatibility with work, personal, and games its meh.

    Intel core i5-4210U @1.7 Ghz 2 cores
    Windows 10 64 bit
    8 GB RAM
    1 TB HD
    Intel R HD Graphics 4400

Personally the HP one is better, what do y'all think?

Also the price for the HP is I think 1500 USD and for the Dell when I bought it in 2013 it was about 430 USD

I've had good experiences with Acer and HP. I don't feel like computer companies purposely force upgrades, but it is more to do with the parts themselves becoming out of date when software demands more and more. A well maintained PC can last a long time.

    get a macbook /s

I have a 2013 iMac, a 2017 Macbook and a 2015 HP Spectre x360. Don’t bother ‘coming for me’ for having a Macbook because I bought it because it’s well tailored to me personally and my own needs for a laptop. They’re not for everyone and I don’t recommend them one bit.

My HP was probably my favourite laptop to date. 256gb SSD, 2.2GHz on intel core i5, the base model has 8gb of ram which I upgraded to 16gb because I was going to be using it for heavy photo and video editing, and some light 3d rendering on Blender. I’m not much of a gamer, but since you’re asking it on a Minecraft forum I could run Minecraft perfectly fine on it with steady FPS. It’s been through nearly 4 years of consistent use and it’s great. For an ultrabook it’s fairly powerful, thin, has a great variety of ports, and also has good battery life, though it’s much heavier than my Macbook (I think the HP was ~3 lbs) so take that as you will. I don’t know if it suits your needs, but I recommended it to a friend for college and he loves it. There are more recent models of the laptop too, but I have no experience using those.

I use the Macbook for school honestly, it’s really shitty. However, I like it because it’s a small 12” screen, 1.5cm thick and barely 2lbs. It has an exceptional battery for its size and which is great for me because I need to carry it around in a bag for most of a day. It’s quality can’t compare to pre-2015 Macbooks—I know several people still rocking 2012 Macbooks that are fully functional. If you don’t hate Apple and aren’t using a laptop for anything super intensive, a 2012-2015 Macbook pro is actually a decent choice, though I’m sure you and most people are sure of the disadvantages Macs have.

I’m not going to really talk about my iMac since you’re not looking for a desktop, and I don’t use it much anyway. But for what it’s worth, it’s doing great for a 6 year old computer. I usually run Photoshop, Premiere and Sony Vegas on it without problem, and again Minecraft runs smoothly. I got it second-hand, and the specs are decent (3.2GHz quad-core i5, 16gb ram, 1tb hard drive) but nothing to write home about.

Anyway, that’s just my experience with laptops. I’ve also had old cheap $200-$300 laptops that become unusable in a year or two. I personally recommend HP but I know Lenovo is also great. Dell is fairly good as well. I personally dislike Acer laptops with a passion, but that’s just me. And Apple, as I said is currently only good for a certain number of people, which you probably aren’t.

My first laptop was a Lenovo and I had it for 7 years. It was okay and it’s still okay to use. But I have upgraded to a gaming laptop, (still a Lenovo) because I wanted to run a lot of things my old laptop couldn’t. My old laptop was getting older and worn out and wasn’t really designed for gaming so I couldn’t play Overwatch, try out MC shaders, or whatnot. But I’ve had a great experience with these two laptops.

From what I've experienced Dell is just average. I haven't had any experience with Acer so I can't give any feedback from that. HP is really good, but sometimes it can get expensive, so better to get it second hand.

Also I run Premiere Pro CS4 on my Dell laptop and it runs alright on it, despite the 1.7 GHz dual core i5.

From personal experience, I'd say Dell and Lenovo are the best if you want just a rugged, long lasting laptop. I have a 5 year old Dell laptop for work that's an absolute trooper, still doing great. I also have a 7 year old $200 Lenovo laptop that still runs fine. I've had to replace the battery on it once, but outside of that it's been doing just fine.

I've never owned an HP laptop, but if they're anything like the workstation I got from them 8 years ago, they're pretty reliable. My desktop I got from them is still running fine to this day. Only issue was it came installed with 10 million HP applications and various other HP bloatware things I had to uninstall.

Asus is nice, it's what I use currently for my personal laptop. Most Asus laptops I've seen are a bit more flimsy than Dell and Lenovo, though, as Asus tends to give up some sturdiness to make their laptops more stylish.

And as Jess said, only get a Mac if it matches your personal needs. The 3 main reasons I've heard for people getting Macbooks, at least in my friend group, are:
    1. Their whole life is Apple, so they get it to complete their Apple ecosystem.
    2. Content creation/editing. Apple products come with lots of easy to use editing and creation tools.
    3. Working in Unix. Macbooks have a built in Unix terminal, which can be convenient if you need to learn/use Unix for you work or education.

I don’t personally have a dell but the ones I’ve used have pretty good quality, so your experience is probably more accurate than mine. If I had to stick to a brand other than Apple it would be HP though.

I run premiere pro cc2018 and it’s super smooth on the computers i have except the macbook but i don’t use it for editing anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My school uses HP pro X2s, and they are absolute trash. 1.5Ghz single core processors, underclocked to save battery, 4gb ram (3 usable) taken up entirely by background filtering processes. I couldn't run minecraft on lowest settings with optifine with more than 10 fps. this computer is so horrible. save me.
