Skyblock economic study

Hello all,

For a very long time, player based economies, especially those which are based entirely on bartering, have interested me. I'd very much like to do a detailed study of the Skyblock economy, and I'd appreciate any insight you could offer me about your experiences as part of this economy.

So far, I've been able to explore two tiers of the economy, from the viewpoint of a poor greenie and a lower to middle-class(to my knowledge) yellow donor.

I'd like for my study to include a structured wealth class system, the positions and roles which different ranks play in the economy, the effect of the 'illegal items' rules, an analysis of the 'rares' driven side of the economy, and the roles/effects which new players and updates have on the economy. This is only a rudimentary list of the things I plan to include.

You don't have to be very rich to voice your opinion. I'd like input from as many players as I can reach. If you'd like to participate in this, please include in your response the following things:
1. Your liquid assets (How many diamonds/grass you have)

2. An estimate of your aggregate wealth(everything you own including rares, blocks, etc.) in diamonds (Round it to the nearest half stack if you're rich enough to not be sure). Assume everything is going for the current market rate.

3. Your rank

4. How long it took you to gather whatever you have(If you ever accidentally wiped your island or been scammed out of everything please take that into account also).

5. Any personal experiences/anecdotes you'd like to add.

5. I’m slowing giving away my stuff to the community. I think there are a lot of players with tenure, like myself who have a significant amount of diamonds/grass/rares. The difference is that I don’t hoard as much.

For your study, please take into account players who no longer are active. There are tons of players who have things of value, but don’t log in. Some of them temporarily don’t play, but others are banned and cannot come back. Also, consider the greenie who got a head or some other rare and does not understand its value.

I do believe that the server is pay-to-win. As a donor100, I get 1 diamond per day (and some iron too). This has helped me get my wool shop going. I was able to afford purchasing wool in bulk and reselling it for a slightly higher price. Without this kit, I do not feel that I would have even half of what I do today.

I am ambitious. Some players like to just hang out and talk to friends. I persued the entrepreneurial aspects of the server by having my wool shop. (which is now closed)

A lot also has to do with the activity of the player. I have taken a hiatus, but there are players who log in every day to vote/collect their kit. Those players will have a significantly higher net worth than those who come in just once in awhile.

4-I joined in 2012 but I started to get these rares around 2014 - 2015 till today
5- Even though I'm "rich" comparing to some people but I have giving many stuff mostly rares and if I didn't give any of rares I would of have about 8000+ diamonds worth of rares. I mostly did giveaway, refunds and donations. I gave away about a total of 5 stacks of spawners to a few people (lol dont ask, i have 1 spawner now), and I got some of my heads confiscated by the staff due to some reason (No I'm not in trouble). And it feels good to be generous. Just like what megadorkvikki said, the server is right pay to win and with me purchasing donor400 I got every kit except kit cobble which helped me alot plus I sometimes give my kits away.

2. Well I really don't know what my Island would sell for. The materials used for building it are certainly worth 4 or 5 stacks of Diamonds I guess.

5. I'm also quite interested in economics and participate in a Society promoting alternative economical models, mainly Free Economy. Sort of a think tank.

The barter economy in Skyblock is also quite interesting to me. I won't restate here what megadorkvikki wrote as I globally agree with her.

Just add that there is no set Price for items exchanged as there is no central stock market (not everyone goes on the Forums and even there you can find quite some discrepancies). Everyone buys and sells to the Price they think appropriate as they lack any other information. I am pretty sure that if suddenly a stock Exchange was introduced and the value or all blocks would be calculated according to they relative value, offer and demand, the Distribution of the riches would be very different.

Also, selling requires a huge amount of Advertising and / or notoriety.

ive been given a lot of items and i’ve given away a lot of my items + i used to share rares w friends so i have rares that aren’t in my possession and ones that i have that aren’t even mine lol and most of this was gained in like 2016(???) even though i haven’t been active since 2014 if that makes sense

my friend gave me my account w donor400 so i didn’t pay for it and i’m not into the rare trade bc i don’t play, i get diamonds and stuff from kits and from friends and stuff it’s a whole mess bc i haven’t been active in so long

 

Thanks for replying! I was beginning to worry that I wouldn't get many responses. I'll keep your suggestions in mind; I've a long list of things to include, since I'm trying to make as comprehensive an analysis as possible.

Your blurb about the wool shop was especially helpful. I'd love to hear more about different ways which people accumulate wealth.

 

Thanks for replying, and there's no need for an apology. It's precisely the ramblings that I want. They often hold much more information than straightforward posts.

I am very much aware that a rank is unnecessary for success. My first island was a beautiful coop island that I joined with another greenie. He's been gone for two years now, as has the island, but before it was wiped, I managed to accrue about 5 stacks of diamonds and a chest of grass.

5. I would say around 4k of my items are from friends who quit gave me their items. A few of my upgrades were from peoples generosity. A lot of my items I bought have just increased in price such as my beacons I bought a lot of when they were worth around 150dia, and a lot from kits too.

5. I also have 2 natural islands with a significant amount of (Placed) grass, didn't include that in #2. Also the majority of my dias and rares come from doing upgrades. I've upgraded myself as well as 3 people to d400, 1 person to d250, 1 person to d100, and countless other small upgrades. I regularly give away diamonds to players as well.

Hello there! It's a nice idea so... Why don't I participate?

Liquid assets: Uhm.. Like 2 stacks of diamonds and a single chest of grass.

Agregate Wealth (Aproximately): It's not much but I'm gonna say... 10 stacks of diamonds or more.

Rank: Donor100 (went from greenie to Donor25 - Donor50 - Donor100).

How long it took me: Well, I joined the server... 3-4 years ago, maybe... But I only became a donor last year.

Personal experiences: I've been scammed, of course, as the majority of us. It makes me sad thinking about it, well, not sad, angry. You might think I don't have enough diamonds, but I don't think the game's about getting rich. Sure, being rich is AWESOME, but I enjoy helping people, maybe giving them materials, or just building for them for free. I don't know if that'll change in the future, but I am ok with what I have, and with what I am doing.

4. I’ve been here since 2013, so about 5 years I guess.
There was a time where I was scammed an upgrade so that probably lost me 100-200 diamonds and some grass.
Most of my rares are beacons, I have 7 total.
I also give a lot of stuff away.
Pretty sure I sold a beacon for 10 stacks of sticks the other day.

Uhm about a month

First started around 2012, played till 2014/15. Decided to quit therefore gave everything away, now am just recently back and am kinda starting up again. Not making it a priority to gain rares as the new server is coming out 'very soon' and will mostly be moving over.

I started over in May 2017, so 7ish months.

Any personal experiences/anecdotes you'd like to add.
I personally have a very low value of the pixels on the server, and have never bought rares (save beacons, which have a practical and aesthetic use). I've haven't run businesses/shops that increase my wealth. I've also only ever bought $25 in ranks. The rest (rank and item-wise) was collected through circumstance/friends or through collecting my donor250 kit.
