Edit: Removed complaint of voting/submission threads getting hidden/locked

I think it's worth having a discussion over what makes a good shortlist. I think there are three aspects:

    1) It should not be possible for any winning heads to share qualities other than artistic style with the other winning heads. This would make a more diverse and well-rounded end result.

    2) It should not be possible for more than 2 winners to come from the same player. Maybe someone is a pixel artist that's just built different, but that doesn't mean they should just steamroll the competition.

    3) Be transparent. If you are going to have a system implemented, it only helps if the players understand. That way they can make heads that have a better chance of being accepted, and people will be less inclined to give you s*** if you explain how you try to make it balanced.

The best way I can think to achieve this is to state these principles and how the shortlist will be determined in the original post. Then, after players have submitted their heads, make voting groups of 3 based on theme. The winner of each group would become a winning head.

    Example:
    Noobcrew heads
animals (bat, cat in a basket)
    objects (haunted house/cauldron)
    pumpkins
    death (skulls/grave)
miscellaneous (some don't fit a certain theme)

Lastly, because you have these groups, it becomes easy to make sure a player cannot have more than 2 winning submissions. Just don't add their heads to more than 2 groups.

I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that it should be so easy and staff are incompetent. In truth it's hard to please the entire community. A lot complain about the staff being too controlling of the final result, but I think that almost always comes with criticism of fairness. If staff can document their effort to conduct these competitions fairly, I think most everyone would be quite happy.

    Well said.
Things like this need planning and restrictions in place. You don’t create a shortlist by anonymously voting. You make it a collaborative effort, else you are not likely to have the best outcome.

True, it’s not easy to please everyone but it is easy to ensure you don’t frustrate the majority.

what bothers me is how many crew and skull heads are often promoted. Even a shocker the fact there's a staff head on that (most) of us did not want to see? I get this is skyblock and having a crew head is to reflect on noobcrew and his dedication to the server, however if it's gonna be a well celebrated event it should be specially designed without any reference to crew. Not everything has to be crew related. Just shows how stuck up admin can be. I think crew heads can be brought up for different occasions.

Another point to bring up, crew heads are becoming less valuable since it's basically the same design. Some of us play on the server to collect rare heads and we want to be able to build a diverse selection of heads and value on our rare head collections. In my opinion newer crew heads are not I want.

Hey Qoby. I am at work currently but I’d like to address some of this now very quickly! :)

A couple of things for now, I spent 3 hours grouping the 70 heads into categories for when the staff anonymously voted on those heads. The shortlist consists of the Top 2/3 (accounting for overlap) from each group. Hence why the shortlist is the size it is at present.
As we did for the Easter Drop party voting, we moved the original entry thread to the archives to eliminate bias when voting. Once the deadline for voting was closed, we then move the thread back to where it belongs. I appreciate this may cause an element of confusion.

Finally, I have locked the original voting thread as there will be a further information this evening which we hope with put a lot of concern to rest.

    Here's your simple fix:

    - Submissions stay the same, with everyone able to submit as many as they'd like

    - Much more strict on originality rules. Heads must be made from scratch and cannot be taken from databases. Heads also can not be existing heads with very slight changes made to them.

    - Reverse the shortlist order. Community votes for the first shortlist

    - Shortlist length depends on the amount of submissions. With 70 submissions this time, 10-15 might have been a good number for the shortlist

    - Shortlist cannot contain more than 2 heads per player. If a player has 3 submissions and all 3 get in, the lowest of the 3 will be removed and next highest voted made by someone else will get in.

    - Only 1 heads can be of similar make within the shortlist. For example, if multiple heads with a pumpkin theme as the basis win, the highest voted one will be picked. This also encourages new designs when submitting the original heads

    - Crew/Staff related heads are limited to 1 in the shortlist and final 6. If 2 or more are voted for, the lowest ones will be removed

    - Staff now choose the final 6 from the shortlist by anonymous vote

This would fix 95% of the problems that were mentioned and change the voting process to community heavy rather than staff heavy while still giving staff the chance to pick the final heads. Problem solved.

It also feels like player rated reactions to heads had little to no impact on what heads were actually shortlisted. Many of the top rated heads from the original post are nowhere to be seen, and many of the heads who received little to no reactions from the community have somehow found their way onto the shortlist. I don't think it is going to be possible to find a perfect solution to this because its still a new idea. It just feels like we make the heads and support each other with our creations for it to be null and void when shortlisting comes into play.

I think this may be the biggest issue. This is a "community competition" and in no way are the community's interests reflected by the shortlist.

Don't think you jumped to any conclusions, I can promise you at least 80% of what you said is true. I think you did a great job of bringing up this thread to showcase how shortcoming the staff can be. Sadly this wasn't the first time the staff voted on heads that weren't reflected by the community. I'm happy the staff are encouraging community members to participate and that's the first step but there should be more things to be done.

You didn't jump to any conclusions, everything mentioned is valuable feedback we will most certainly take on board. You did an amazing job of explaining your thoughts and we appreciate that greatly.

Just to clarify, I stand by my post. Just not the first part where I thought they hid the submission thread and locked the voting thread for the wrong reasons.
